Why Spring Feels So Energizing (And How to Actually Use That Energy)
Have you ever noticed how one random day in spring you just… feel better? Yeah, like nothing huge changed, nothing dramatic happened, but suddenly you have a little more energy. You feel a little lighter. Maybe you wake up and don’t feel as groggy. Maybe you open the windows, start cleaning something, or feel the urge to go outside for no real reason. It’s not just in your head. There’s actually a real reason spring feels like this, and once you understand it, you can start working with that energy instead of letting it pass you by.
Spring gives you a natural boost… but if you don’t slow down enough to notice it, you can miss it.
Your body is literally waking up
Winter has a very real effect on the body. Less sunlight means your body produces more melatonin, the hormone that makes you feel sleepy. Your circadian rhythm (your internal clock) can get a little off. Energy dips, motivation drops, and everything just feels slower.
And again… that’s not a bad thing. It’s actually part of how we’re designed.
But then spring comes in and quietly flips the switch. More sunlight hits your eyes earlier in the day. That signals your brain to reduce melatonin and increase serotonin, which is often called the “feel good” chemical. Your sleep starts to regulate. Your mood lifts. Your energy begins to come back. So if you’ve been feeling more like yourself again lately, or even just a little more motivated than usual… That’s your biology working in your favor.
But here’s where most people get it wrong
The second people feel that energy come back, they try to do everything at once.
They want to: Start a new routine, fix their diet, work out every day, organize their entire house, set a bunch of new goals, become a completely new person overnight, and that’s where burnout starts. Because that spring energy isn’t meant to be spent all at once.
It’s meant to be guided. Think about nature for a second. Spring doesn’t rush. Trees don’t panic-grow leaves in one day. Flowers don’t bloom all at once overnight. Everything unfolds in layers, slowly and intentionally. For the season and timing its meant to be in.
That’s the kind of energy we should be working with. Not chaotic motivation, but steady, building momentum, that's steadfast.
What this energy is actually good for
Instead of using spring energy to overhaul your entire life, use it to reconnect with yourself.
That’s where it works best. You might notice things like, wanting to move your body more, feeling drawn to fresh foods instead of heavy meals, wanting to clean or clear out your space, thinking about your goals again, or feeling a little more hopeful or open. Pause! Those are signals! Not commands, you don’t have to act on all of them at once. But you can start paying attention to them! Your body is telling you things!
Start small (this matters more than you think)
If you try to do too much, you’ll override the very energy that’s trying to come back.
Instead, think, and do in small shifts. Open your windows in the morning. Sit in the sunlight for a few minutes. Go for a walk without your phone. Drink more water. Add something fresh to one meal a day.
That’s it.
It doesn’t need to be complicated.
The goal isn’t to impress yourself, it’s to reconnect with yourself.
Your nervous system is part of this too
One of the biggest reasons spring feels good has nothing to do with productivity.
It’s your nervous system. After months of being inside more, moving less, and possibly holding onto stress from the winter season, your body is ready to regulate again. Nature is one of the fastest ways to do that. Sunlight, fresh air, trees, open space, these all send signals to your body that speak “You’re safe. You can relax.” That’s why even a short walk outside can shift your mood so quickly. Not because you “did something productive” but because your body finally got what it needed.
This is also a really emotional season (and no one talks about it)
Spring doesn’t just bring energy. It can also bring things to the surface. You might notice, old thoughts coming back, a desire to change something in your life, feeling restless or unsure, wanting more, but not knowing what that looks like yet, this is normal. When energy starts moving again, so do emotions. It’s like everything that felt quiet in the winter starts waking up too. Instead of pushing that away, this is actually the best time to listen to it.
Because usually, those feelings are trying to tell you something.
How to actually use this season (without burning out)
If you take anything from this, let it be this...
You don’t need to rush spring.
You just need to notice it.
Notice what feels different. Notice what your body is asking for.
Notice what feels heavy vs. what feels light.
And then respond gently.
Not perfectly.
Not aggressively.
Just intentionally.
Maybe this is the season you, spend more time outside, reconnect with your routines slowly, let go of something that’s been weighing on you, try something new without pressure, or simply allow yourself to feel a little more like you again.
A simple way to think about it
Spring isn’t asking you to become someone new. It’s inviting you back to yourself. Back to your energy. Back to your body. Back to your awareness. The more you meet this season with patience instead of pressure… The more naturally everything else starts to fall into place. So if you’ve been feeling that little shift lately, that small spark of motivation, that urge to open the windows, that pull to go outside or change something in your life…
Don’t ignore it.
But don’t rush it either.
Just follow it… slowly.
That’s where the real change happens.
All my love,
Tammy Rae
