Slowing Down (For Real This Time)

Updated: Nov 4, 2025

Lately, I’ve been noticing how easy it is to get caught in “go mode.” Even on the days I tell myself I’m going to rest, my mind is already halfway through the next five things. It’s like I’ve been trained to fill every quiet moment with something, a task, a thought, a scroll, a “productive” little project. But the truth is… I don’t want to live like that. Not anymore.

There’s a different kind of rhythm I’m craving, one that feels a little softer, a little slower, a little more like the way the sun rises without an alarm clock.

Not Everything Has to be Rushed

I’ve noticed that when I actually pause, even for a few minutes. Things come into focus. My body tells me what it needs. My heart settles. My mind stops spinning just long enough for me to hear that quiet inner voice that’s been waiting all along. Slowing down doesn’t mean quitting everything. It can look like sipping your tea without multitasking. Stepping outside and actually noticing the sound of the wind. Taking the long way home because you can.

Little moments like that feel like exhaling after holding your breath for too long.

Rest Isn't Laziness

Somewhere along the way, we started believing rest was something we had to earn. But what if rest is actually a form of trust? Trusting your body, trusting the natural rhythm of things, trusting that it’s okay to just be for a while. For me, it’s been choosing slower mornings. Letting the sun wake me up. Eating breakfast without rushing out the door. Giving myself permission to not have everything figured out right away.

A Tiny Challenge for You ( and Me)

Try slowing down once today. Just once. It could be during your lunch break, on a walk, while folding laundry, or even just before bed. Put away the distractions and let yourself be fully in that moment. Notice how it feels. Notice what shifts inside of you when you stop pushing for a bit. You might be surprised by how much your body and heart have been waiting for that pause.

Life doesn’t have to be lived at full speed to be meaningful. Sometimes, the richest parts are the ones that happen when we finally slow down enough to notice them.
